Description

The property has a long history. It was built in 1922 by William Riddle, an artist and city councilman who also built the Hotel Del Camino at 1289 S Coast Hwy. Eventually, the property became home to “The Old Brussels Restaurant” which was frequented by local celebrity residents, such as Bette Davis. Laguna Beach’s Historic Resources Inventory List, which was first released in 1981, included the property, and the property is currently listed on the Historic Register list with the city. Property owners who have structures on this list have entered into an agreement with the city to preserve the historic nature of their buildings, but improvements and renovations are still commonly approved by the city in order to keep these properties up to date and financially viable. This property is “E” Rated, the highest grade possible, with the city; “Buildings with this classification are outstanding historic architectural examples. Most have been recommended eligible for the National Register and those which are not may be considered for National Register status in the future. Buildings in this category are usually in excellent architectural condition and are typically unique or excellent historical and/or historical architectural examples.” The property is also eligible for the Mills Act, which allows the owner to enter an agreement with the city to preserve the historical nature of the property in exchange for potential tax benefits on the city, state, and federal level.
